Located just south of Downtown Hendersonville, NC is the small Village of Flat Rock. Established in 1807 by wealthy Charlestonians, Flat Rock, NC was nicknamed Little Charleston of the Mountains. From it’s inception it has been the place for people to spend the hot summers, coming from all over the southeast. A big spot not only for those from South Carolina, but also Florida and Georgia. Today, however, people come from all over the country, seeking refuge from the heat and humidity of the summer.
The Village of Flat Rock, NC is home to the Carl Sandburg Home, and the Flat Rock Playhouse. It is also home to Rainbow Row, a small strip of businesses that houses art, great food and some of the friendliest faces in the area.
You can check out the small used bookstore, The Flat Rock Book Exchange, which is home to the best deals in used books anywhere. This business is located in the old post office and the building is on the list of the National Registry of Historic Buildings. It has been restored and is a great asset to the community.
The Flat Rock Book Exchange was started by volunteers from the St. John’s of the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Flat Rock. This is an all volunteer business that raises money for local charities. And they have a lot of books to choose from so you can find about anything.
